Effective technology implementation in schools leads to significantly higher student achievement and positive financial impact. That is a bold statement, but one with the backing of Project RED, a team that conducted a survey of a thousand schools to find out what makes technology integration work. Project RED has concluded that properly implemented educational technology, especially 1-to-1 programs where technology is continuously accessible, substantially improves student achievement and can be revenue positive at the local, state, and federal levels. The key is successful integration that brings about transformational change.

Social media tools can help break the barriers set by the walls of schools. As the flipped classrooms concept has grown popular, receiving more supporters each day, many have been noticing the need to increase the level of communication between students and teachers. Moreover, parents should also be included in this circle of communication to keep track of their children, evaluate the teaching methods and thus being able to involve themselves in the education of their young ones.

Hey, how about some good news from Detroit? As noted recently, education in Detroit is coming out of the tailspin. There are some very good schools serving high need populations and it rivals the Bay Area for innovations in blended learning.

Last week I toured schools and joined a CEE-Trust Blended Learning Summit (and today I’m back in Detroit headed for another innovative blended school, Nexus Academy of Lansing).

Cornerstone. With a long history in the independent school space, Cornerstone Charter Schools is a network of four growing blended schools with strong roots and capacity.

Winner of a Gates-funded Next Generation Learning Challenges grant (anddiscussed in an NGLC blog ), Cornerstone Charter Health High School is a Carpe Diem-like flex model featuring Apex curriculum. In its first year the school serves about ninth graders. The health-focused school has a great relationship with the nearby medical center where many students will spend time in their last two years.

AUGUSTA, Maine – Thousands of Maine students will be firing up Hewlett Packard laptop computers when school starts this fall, the governor’s office announced Saturday.

The Maine Department of Education announced Friday that Hewlett Packard was awarded the contract in the Maine Learning Technology Initiative’s latest bid process, according to a press release.

The Hewlett Packard ProBook 4440 running Windows 8 software will be made available as the primary technology and learning solution as part of the initiative.

“It is important that our students are using technology that they will see and use in the workplace,” said Gov. Paul LePage. “This is the lowest-priced proposal, and the laptops use an operating system that is commonly used in the workplace in Maine. These laptops will provide students with the opportunity to enhance their learning and give them experience on the same technology and software they will see in their future careers.”

We are at a cosmic moment in K-12 education. The conflux of the impeding implementation of Common Core State Standards (and other new state standards) with the advent of new, high quality, educationally rigorous and
innovative digital tools and resources presents an unprecedented opportunity for holistically transforming the learning experience for all K-12 students. How we effectively leverage this opportunity may be the greatest challenge of the next decade in our schools and communities.

1. It’s still about the people – the educators, the students, the parents, and administrators – and making sure voices are heard, stakeholders are brought into all conversations. Decisions should start with these types of questions – How will [students] benefit and participate? How will [teachers] lead? How will [parents] support? Then ask the questions again but switch the stakeholder name.
