Based on results from many one-to-one teaching and learning programs across the nation, well-planned one-to-one teaching and learning programs will pay dividends for a number of reasons:
  • One-to-one programs reach each child individually and re-engage students in their studies, as well as improving technology skills needed to succeed in school and in life.
  • Teachers are revitalized, students are more engaged (better attendance, lower discipline problems, better time on task), and test scores are showing improvements.
  • Unlike other programs that provide only pieces of an independent solution (isolated virtual courses, inconsistent professional development, unregulated funding for classroom size reduction), one-to-one initiatives provide all elements of a school improvement initiative.
  • One-to-one access to educational technology across a state or large school district provides efficiencies and scalability in hardware and software acquisition, professional development, and the sharing and deployment of lesson learned and best practices to ensure that technology adoption is systematic and synchronized.
  • Equipping every teacher and every student in a school with a laptop transforms schools from "sit and get" to powerful new forms of student-centered teaching and learning.
  • The One-to-One Institute sponsored the development of abstracts from 50 research papers and articles on the impact and effectiveness of one-to-one teaching and learning programs. We acknowledge Dr. William Hamilton for his work on the synthesis and production of this report.
